The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced on October 28th, 2021, that effective immediately, it is removing the National Coverage Determination (NCD) for Transvenous (Catheter) Pulmonary Embolectomy (NCD 240.6), permitting Medicare coverage determinations for Transvenous (Catheter) Pulmonary Embolectomy to be made by Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs).

Currently, Transvenous (Catheter) Pulmonary Embolectomy is noncovered through a longstanding NCD (NCD 240.6). In its decision memo, CMS cited SCAI and other commenters stating, “We thank the commenters for their comments and agree with this position.”
