Aetna to Require Prior Authorization for Peripheral Vascular Interventions on September 1, 2023 | SCAI

Aetna has released a new policy requiring physicians and other healthcare professionals to work with eviCore to pre-authorize peripheral services such as angioplasty, stenting, atherectomy, and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), effective September 1, 2023. SCAI has worked with ACC, SIR, AVLS, and SVS to advocate with eviCore for changes to their guidelines. We were successful in removing IAC vein center accreditation and venous scan interpretation by only an RPVI or RVT. We were also successful in getting the IVUS policy changed from investigational to not routinely medically necessary.

SCAI has continued to advocate for a broader IVUS policy and is awaiting additional consideration from eviCore. SCAI and ACC have also sent a letter to Aetna requesting a 60-day period without denials for authorization as practices continue to learn about this new policy.
