The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have released a blog post outlining key takeaways that CMS staff has received from listening sessions regarding how to better involve specialists in accountable care organization (ACO) models.
The post discusses four key considerations that will be reviewed as part of CMS Innovation Center's strategic refresh, launched in October 2021:
- Enhancing data sharing between primary care and specialists to determine referral appropriateness
- Design episode-based payment models that better align incentives with other ACOs
- Focus models on special populations that require intensive specialty care
- Integrate specialists into primary care delivery pathways.
SCAI will closely monitor these developments.
