Neel Butala, MD, MBA | SCAI

Neel Butala, MD, MBA is the Medical Director of Structural Heart Disease and Intervention for the VA Eastern Colorado Healthcare System, an interventional cardiologist at the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center and the University of Colorado Hospital, and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Butala’s research focuses on the use of rigorous statistical methods in large real-world datasets and clinical trial datasets to generate novel clinical insights in interventional cardiology. To date, his research has investigated the real-world clinical use, efficacy, and safety of cardiovascular devices, therapies, and care pathways in the NCDR’s CathPCI Registry and STS/ACC TVT Registry; explored how cardiovascular clinical trial results from the US pivotal TAVR trials and DAPT Study extend to a diversity of real-world clinical settings and patients; and evaluated pragmatically-collected hospital and administrative data for use in randomized clinical trials. Dr. Butala holds AB magna cum laude in Economics with High Honors from Harvard College, an MD cum laude from Yale School of Medicine, and an MBA from Yale School of Management. He completed his Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, and Structural Heart Disease training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA.

In 2022, Dr. Butala received the inaugural SCAI-Shockwave Early Career Research Grant for his project, "Use of Calcium Modification for Coronary Lesions: National Trends, Hospital Variation, and Disparities."
