SCAI has launched a new video series called "Pioneers in Interventional Cardiology," which highlights the stories and accomplishments of influential figures in the interventional cardiology field from its early days. New videos will be released quarterly.
“SCAI and interventional cardiology have a rich history of innovation. The goal of the ‘Pioneers in Interventional Cardiology’ series is to preserve that history,” said Dr. Tim Henry, MSCAI and SCAI president 2021-2022. “We are nearing the 50th anniversary of the first angioplasty and, fortunately, many of the amazing people who blazed the trail of interventional cardiology are still with us. This series is an opportunity to hear their stories firsthand.”
The first video, available now, features Spencer B. King III, MD, MSCAI, John S. Douglas, Jr., MD, MSCAI, H. Vernon "Skip" Anderson, MD, FSCAI, and J. Jeffrey Marshall, MD, MSCAI. The panel discusses Andreas Gruentzig's innovative work and shares personal reflections, anecdotes, and firsthand experiences.
This interview serves as a heartfelt tribute to the profound impact of Dr. Gruentzig’s work and the pivotal moments he shaped in the history of interventional cardiology. SCAI expresses deep gratitude to Dr. Andreas Gruentzig for his relentless efforts that have significantly advanced the field of interventional cardiology.
“This series brings to life many pioneering physicians and innovators that you’ve read about or heard about,” Henry said. “There are many great stories that we look forward to telling, from the first stent, to the first TAVR, to how intravascular ultrasound was developed and the early days of Primary PCI. Eventually, we will have assembled a rich video and written history about the “Pioneers in Interventional Cardiology” who got us to where we are today.”
