KEYNOTE SPEAKER: SCAI 2018 is excited to announce that Roberto Canessa, MD, will provide the keynote address for this year's annual meeting. Dr. Canessa is one of the 16 survivors of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight that crashed into the Andes Mountain on October 13, 1972. A medical student at the time, Dr. Canessa was familiar with what the human body could withstand. He suggested to his fellow survivors to eat the flesh of the deceased victims to survive. Canessa went on to become a Pediatric Cardiologist at Hospital Italiano in Uruguay where he also serves as the director of the Department of Cardiac Ultrasound and the Department of Prenatal Diagnosis of Congenital Heart Diseases. His inspiring story of battling adversity is shared in his recent book, I Had to Survive: How a Plane Crash in the Andes Inspired my Calling to Save Lives.
