WASHINGTON — Female cardiologists are less likely to choose interventional cardiology as their subspecialty, in part due to concerns about radiation exposure and its effects. However, the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) is determined to dispel the myths surrounding radiation in the cath lab and encourage more women to join the specialty.
According to recent studies, 21% of general cardiology fellows and 8% of interventional cardiology fellows were women. The SCAI Women in Innovations (WIN) Radiation Safety Campaign aims to address this gender disparity by providing accurate information and support to female cardiologists considering interventional cardiology.
"The underrepresentation of women in interventional cardiology is a significant concern," said Dr. Nadia Sutton, Chair of the SCAI WIN Committee and Director of Interventional Cardiology Research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. "We believe that by dispelling the fears and misconceptions surrounding radiation exposure, we can empower more female cardiologists to pursue this rewarding subspecialty."
Radiation exposure in the cath lab has long been a concern for healthcare professionals, particularly for women who may be planning to start a family. However, advancements in technology and safety protocols can significantly mitigate radiation risks. The SCAI WIN Radiation Safety Campaign aims to educate female cardiologists about these advancements and provide them with the tools and resources to make informed decisions.
Dr. Suzanne Baron, Director of Interventional Cardiology Research at Massachusetts General Hospital, emphasized the importance of addressing these fears. "Radiation safety is a top priority in interventional cardiology, and we want to ensure that female cardiologists have access to accurate information. By dispelling the myths and providing support, we hope to encourage more women to pursue this exciting field."
By fostering a supportive environment and providing accurate information tailored to address the concerns of female cardiologists, the SCAI WIN Radiation Safety Campaign aims to increase the representation of women in interventional cardiology and ultimately improve patient care.
