Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is an issue that many interventional cardiologists address every day with their patients. They see firsthand how PAD can have a devastating effect on an individual’s quality of life. But did you know that in addition to being a leading cause of the over 400 amputations per day that take place in our country, PAD has an estimated economic impact of $400 billion for Americans each year?
We need our government to lend its strength to the fight against PAD. Yet right now, PAD screening is not even covered under federal Medicare and Medicaid programs.
SCAI members Alexander Fanaroff, MD, MHS, Foluso Fakorede, MD, and Osama Ibrahim, MD, FSCAI, joined the Congressional PAD Caucus to advocate for legislation to provide coverage for PAD screening and create education and awareness programs for patients and healthcare providers about this disease.
The Congressional champions of the PAD Caucus, Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. (D-NJ) and Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), are committed to fighting this disease, but we need your voice to help them.
