Reps. Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.), Mike Kelly (R-Penn.), Ami Bera, MD, (D-Calif.), and Larry Bucshon, MD, (R-Ind.) have reintroduced the Improving Seniors’ Timely Access to Care Act of 2021 (H.R. 3173). While prior authorization can play a role in controlling the cost of care, when misused, it can often lead to delay and results in increased administrative burdens for physicians. This takes precious time away from patient care and potentially obstructs needed medical intervention. This bipartisan legislation would improve the prior authorization process in Medicare Advantage (MA) by establishing an electronic prior authorization program and instituting common-sense transparency and accountability about items and services subject to prior authorization.
