Program Overview

At the SCAI Fellows Interventional Cardiology Course, you will learn about coronary, peripheral vascular, and structural heart disease interventions and stay up to date on atherectomy and hemodynamic support devices and the safest pharmacotherapies. To be a successful operator, you need more than incredible technical skills, so in this course, you will learn from experts on negotiating employment contracts, transitioning to attending, and inspiring and leading your team for the best outcomes for you and your patients. 

Through access to experienced SCAI leaders, collaboration with industry supporters, and interaction with your peers, the SCAI Fellows Interventional Cardiology Course will enable you to:

• Analyze operator risks from invasive angiography and intervention and employ risk mitigation strategies
• Apply techniques for coronary interventions, including atherectomy; chronic total occlusions; bypass graft intervention; and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in left main, bifurcations, and multivessel disease
• Describe optimal techniques for performing coronary intervention, including antithrombin and antiplatelet agents
• Develop nonclinical competencies necessary for cath lab leadership, including managing team dynamics and finances and fostering a culture of safety through effective communication and reporting
• Discuss the clinical indications and procedural techniques for performing left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO), atrial septal defect (ASD), and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closures; paravalvular leak closures; transcatheter mitral valve replacements (TMVRs); and transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVRs)
• Evaluate diagnostic studies, clinical guidelines, appropriate use criteria, devices, access techniques, and therapies for the treatment of cardiovascular disease to improve the early and late clinical outcomes after coronary/peripheral/structural heart disease interventions
• Summarize the evidence supporting and skills employed for carotid revascularization; lower extremity arterial revascularization; and treating aortic, renal artery, and mesenteric artery disease

Eligibility 

If you are currently in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) interventional cardiology fellowship program in the US or Canada and have not previously attended this SCAI Fellows Course, you are eligible for the SCAI Fellows Interventional Cardiology Course.

Scholarship Details

All accepted participants will receive:

• Complimentary registration for the SCAI Fellows Interventional Cardiology Course
• Reimbursed hotel accommodations at the Hyatt Regency Miami for four nights (December 2–6)
• Reimbursed ground transportation up to $250 
• For attendees coming from the US or Canada, reimbursed coach airfare to and from Miami up to $500 (restrictions apply; the full travel policy will be provided upon acceptance)

Full participation is required for 100 percent reimbursement. All attendees must: 

• Arrive by 6:30 pm on Friday, December 2
• Book a flight departure after 12:30 pm on Tuesday, December 6
• Participate in all sessions, including the exhibit hall tour, satellites, and meal functions

Required Documentation

• A signed letter from your program director stating the dates of your fellowship
• A copy of your curriculum vitae (CV)

Your application will be reviewed, and you will be notified within two weeks of the status of your application.

International Attendees

SCAI is excited to welcome back international fellows for the SCAI 2022 Fellows Courses. We set aside a specific number of scholarships for our Interventional Course and Congenital Heart Disease Course for attendees outside of the US and Canada. These scholarships are distributed among SCAI’s international societal partners who in turn, select the fellows. Please contact your local society for details.

International fellows may apply for the congenital course, however, preference is given to those training in the US. International fellows will not be accepted for the Advanced Courses. If you have additional questions, please contact Liz Burke.
